Nowadays, more and more brands are offering cloud features, but the way they connect varies considerably. Below is an overview of the main differences:
Some models make it very easy for you by integrating the technology into the camera:
AZDome S58: This model is very user-friendly because the (included) SIM card fits directly into the dashcam. An AZDome subscription gives you access to a live connection and parking alerts. Please note: There is no cloud storage; footage remains on the SD card.
BlackVue DR970X LTE: This dashcam also has a built-in SIM slot, so no additional module is required. BlackVue does, however, support extensive cloud storage. A paid subscription is also required for full access and storage.
With most dashcam brands that support cloud storage, you need an external module to connect the camera to the internet:
Gnet, BlackVue and models such as the Vantrue E2 Pro, N2X, N4 Pro S and N5S support cloud functions via an optional LTE module. You insert the SIM card into this separate module, which you then connect to the dashcam. Because you connect the module to the dashcam, it remains active even when the dashcam is in parking mode (provided you have connected the dashcam to a hardwire kit).
Brands such as Nextbase, Garmin and FineVu also offer cloud options, but do not support LTE: these cameras cannot be upgraded with their own SIM card or LTE adapter. You must connect the dashcam to an external Wifi hotspot (such as a mobile router in the car).
Limitation in parking mode: This is often less practical for security whilst parked. As soon as the car’s ignition is switched off, most built-in Wifi hotspots also switch off, causing the cloud connection to be lost.
