We also offer suitable solutions for business customers. Our truck dashcams help many drivers and transport companies to reduce damage, and many taxi drivers rely on our special taxi dashcams. We are also the right place for installation specialists or cloud fleet management solutions.

A dashcam - also known as a car camera or dashboard camera - is a small camera in your car that films everything that happens on the road. You place a dashcam on the windscreen, usually behind the interior mirror, and connect it to the cigarette lighter with a car charger and long cable. As soon as the dashcam receives power (when you start the car) it turns on and starts recording and when you turn off the car, the dashcam turns off. So you don't have to worry about it anymore.

You insert a Micro SD card into the dashcam, and all videos are stored on it. A dashcam stores the videos in short fragments of usually 3 or 5 minutes. As soon as the SD card is full, the oldest videos are automatically deleted to make room for new recordings. This means the dashcam continuously records so that the most recent journeys are always saved. This function is called loop recording.

The capacity of the Micro SD card and the quality of the videos ultimately determine how many videos can be saved. Most dashcams support Micro SD cards up to 128GB or even 256GB, which is good for approximately 20 and 40 hours of FullHD videos respectively. With a 2CH dashcam with a rear camera, the total recording time is of course less because the dashcam then has to save two videos at the same time.

Another unique feature of a dashcam is the G-sensor. This vibration sensor detects when you have been in a collision and saves the current video in that case. These protected videos can no longer be overwritten. This ensures that the most important recordings are always saved.

Image quality of a dashcam

Dashcams or car cameras come in all shapes and sizes and with all kinds of functions. Most people, however, buy a dashcam with good image quality. Most dashcams film with at least FullHD resolution, but there are also many dashcams with 2K (QuadHD) or 4K resolution. The resolution indicates how many pixels the videos consist of and thus indicates how ‘large’ and detailed the videos will ultimately be.

Although the resolution does not necessarily say anything about the image quality of the dashcam, it is an important factor. Larger videos with more pixels can capture more details, such as people or licence plates. A disadvantage of a high-resolution dashcam is that the files are much larger and you can store fewer videos on the SD card at a time. With almost all dashcams you can therefore also set the resolution to a lower setting.

The number of fps (frames per second) is another important factor when buying a dashcam. Most dashcams record at 30fps, which actually means that 30 photos are taken per second. Some car cameras can also record at 60fps or even 120fps. The videos are then a lot smoother and it also becomes easier to watch something in slow motion. However, at 60fps the files are also twice as large as at 30fps, which means your SD card will fill up more quickly.

Mounting on the windscreen

A dashcam is usually attached to the windscreen, preferably in a place where it is not too noticeable for the driver but still registers the road well. To the right behind the interior mirror is often a good place. Some dashcams can also be mounted on the dashboard, but this often results in a much poorer view. Furthermore, the recordings will be upside down, which you can sometimes correct with software.

Most people buy a dashcam with a self-adhesive holder. The holder stays on the windscreen and the dashboard camera can usually be easily removed from the holder. The advantage of a dashcam with a self-adhesive holder is that it is often more firmly attached and gives less vibration. Some dashcams also have a suction cup holder. These dashcams are slightly easier to install and remove, but these car cameras are often more sensitive to vibrations and the suction cups lose their suction power over time.

There are also dashcams that you place over your car's existing interior mirror. These are often ‘full mirror’ mirror dashcams that also function as a digital interior mirror. The image from the rear camera is shown in full on the screen of these dashcams. Owners of campers or vans in particular buy this type of dashcam.

As parking protection

Buying a dashcam for your car can also be very useful as parking security for your car. A dashcam with parking mode keeps an eye on things for you when you are not around.

The parking mode on a dashcam is a special recording mode for when the car is parked. It will then automatically start recording if someone walks or drives in front of the car or it will record continuously in a low resolution. This is ideal if you often suffer from vandalism or parking damage. To use a dashcam in parking mode, it must be connected with a hardwire kit or battery pack.

Many 2CH dashcams with a rear camera also allow you to use the car camera as a parking aid. These dashcams sometimes have an extra connection on the rear camera that you can connect to the reversing light's power supply. As soon as you put the car in reverse, the image from the rear camera will be shown in full on the LCD screen, together with parking lines.

When buying a dashcam, there are a few things you can take into account. With a dashcam with Wifi, it is possible to connect your phone or tablet to the dashboard camera within range of the dashcam. You can view or download stored and live images and also change settings. With a cloud dashcam, you can even connect to your dashcam remotely, but you will need an internet connection in your car.

You can buy a GPS dashcam if you also want to track the locations and speed of the videos. Later, you can also view the route travelled. With ADAS on a dashcam, the car camera will notify you of dangerous situations on the road, such as when you are approaching a car at high speed or that the car in front has changed lanes without signalling. With some dashcams, it is possible to place a CPL filter over the lens. This works like polarised sunglasses and can prevent annoying reflections from the dashboard.

Dashcam with or without LCD screen

In addition to the above-mentioned functions, we also differentiate between dashcams with and without LCD screens. A dashboard camera with an LCD screen is slightly easier to operate, but also somewhat larger and more conspicuous. The LCD screen can also be useful for quickly reviewing certain videos. Usually, a screensaver dims the LCD screen automatically after a few minutes of driving so it does not bother you too much.

Dashcams without LCD screens are more compact and less noticeable in the car. You operate these car cameras with your smartphone or tablet and you can also watch the images via Wifi. It is a matter of taste whether you choose a dashcam with or without an LCD screen.

There are also special mirror dashcams, which are in fact fully digital interior mirrors. These have a large touchscreen LCD screen on which the image from the rear camera is displayed. These mirror dashcams are particularly useful in vehicles where rear visibility is limited, such as vans or motorhomes.

Number of cameras on the dashcam

A standard 1CH (1 ‘channel’ or channel) dashcam is usually placed on the windscreen and films everything that happens on the road ahead. A 2CH or dual dashcam is often the same dashcam with an extra camera for behind the car. This rear camera is connected to the front dashcam with a long cable and both cameras record simultaneously. The images are stored separately on the SD card in the front dashcam.

There are also 3CH and 4CH dashcams with 3 and 4 cameras respectively, with which you can record almost everything in or around the car. 3CH dashcams are often car cameras with an additional interior camera and are therefore often used by taxis or driving schools. The AZDome M550 Pro 3CH or Vantrue N4 Pro are popular examples of this.

4CH dashcams are often complete dashcam systems with a separate monitor or module to which four cameras are connected. Many truck dashcams are 4CH dashcams. The Vantrue N5 is also a 4-channel dashcam, but this camera has a third and fourth interior camera on the front and rear cameras. This allows the dashcam to record almost 360 degrees in and around the car.

Additional supplies

To be able to film with your dashcam, you usually only need an SD card. All files from the dashcam are stored on the SD card. It actually works the same as with a photo or video camera. Most dashcams are supplied without an SD card, but in other cases it is specifically mentioned in the title or description (the capacity of the card supplied is usually stated, such as LUKAS LK-9379 WD 16gb).

To hide a dashcam in your car, either professionally or discreetly, you can use a hardwire kit. You can connect this power supply to the fuse box or another power point in the car to power the dashcam (even when the ignition is off, e.g. in parking mode). Another advantage is that you can keep the cigarette lighter in the car free to charge your phone.

Legislation and insurance

In the Netherlands and most other European countries, filming with a dashboard camera is permitted. You can therefore buy a dashcam with confidence in our country. Be careful, however, with uploading dashcam videos to the internet, especially when persons or licence plates are recognisable in the image. In the case of a serious offence or crime, it is better to give the dashcam footage directly to the police.

Dashcams are not permitted in every country. Filming with a dashboard camera is prohibited in the following countries and can result in (very) high fines:

- Luxembourg
- Austria
- Switzerland
- Portugal

In some countries the use of a dashcam is not permitted, but in other countries it is mandatory. In those countries you cannot claim on your car insurance if you do not have a dashcam in your car. In Russia and South Korea, among other countries, this is mandatory and no one goes on the road without a dashcam.

In many other countries – including the United Kingdom – you receive a discount on your car insurance when you use a dashcam. The use of a dashcam saves these insurance companies so much time and money that they can lower the insurance premium. The use of dashcam footage saves the companies a lot of time when sorting out who is at fault in an accident. In addition, insurance companies lose a lot of money on unjustified payments because it is difficult to determine who is at fault in an accident. Moreover, the large-scale use of dashcams throughout the entire chain saves a lot of money because accidents are prevented in advance as people drive more carefully. This makes the use of a dashboard camera advantageous and safe.

Police, justice and privacy

You hear it more and more often in the media: the police or judicial authorities looking for witnesses to a crime and requesting dashcam footage. Because a dashcam records continuously, it is the ideal witness in the case of crimes or offences. Fortunately, the image quality of most dashcams you can buy these days is so good that people and licence plates are easily recognisable on camera. Dashcam images are therefore serving as decisive evidence in more and more investigations and court cases, thus indirectly contributing to a safer society.

A fair and important question that arises when recordings are made in public is: what about privacy? The fact that it is permitted to film in public in the Netherlands does not, of course, mean that every dashcam event should be posted on the internet. We believe in mobility and the ability to move about freely - as discretely as possible. We therefore advise against posting dashcam footage on the internet, even (or especially) if it concerns a dangerous, frustrating or funny situation. It is better to send the footage to the police so they can determine whether further steps are necessary. If you do decide to post dashcam footage on the internet, make sure you blur licence plates and faces. There are various apps and video editing programmes that can help you do this without too much trouble.

Installing a dashcam

We are often asked if we also install dashboard cameras, but we do not do this ourselves. Installing a dashcam yourself is quite simple. When you buy a dashcam, a car charger is often included in the box. This can easily be plugged into the car's cigarette lighter. The most work often involves getting rid of the cable, for which you can use the cable clip sets that we offer as accessories.

To have a dashboard camera professionally installed with a hardwire kit, you can contact your car dealer or another garage. Most companies will charge you about 1 to 1.5 hours of labour for this, and a little more for 2CH dashcams because the cable has to be hidden in the back.

Using a dashcam outside of the car

We are also often asked whether a dashcam can also be used outside the car, for example to monitor the car from outside. In principle, you can also use a dashcam outside the car, provided you have a power supply for your dashboard camera. In the house, you can connect a dashcam to the mains with a standard USB phone charger, for example. Mounting a dashcam outside the car is usually not possible because dashcams (with the exception of some motorbike dashcams) are not waterproof. You also have to take the mounting into account, as dashcams are supplied with suction cup or sticker attachments that are meant for mounting on a slanted windscreen. Not all dashcams make it possible or easy to aim the dashcam in the right position.
